Large Area X-Ray Detectors: low noise.
A new series of highly sensitive, low noise X-ray detectors is based on proprietary Large Area Avalanche Photodiode (LAAPD) technology. Specifically, each detector module consists of a windowless, thermoelectrically cooled (TEC), 5 mm diameter LAAPD, a charge sensitive preamplifier (CSP) board, and a mounting plate that also serves as a heatsink for the TEC. The high internal gain of the LAAPD (up to 300) enables it to deliver excellent sensitivity and noise characteristics, utilizing a simple preamplifier system. In contrast, photodetectors with no internal gain require much more sophisticated electronics to approach the same level of performance. These new detectors can be used for direct, detection and spectrometry of beta particles and low energy X-rays, or, when coupled with scintillators, for sensing gamma rays and higher energy X-rays. In either configuration, their unique combination of large area and low noise makes them the ideal choice for high precision applications in analytical chemistry, radiation monitoring, materials analysis and low-level pulse counting.
