Lancers clinch share of title.

Byline: PREP ROUNDUP The Register-Guard

Jerad Thompson belted a grand slam in a nine-run fourth inning to lift Churchill to a 14-2 victory at Springfield on Monday, giving the Lancers at least a share of their third straight Midwestern League baseball title.


Thompson was 2-for-3 with five RBIs and Adam Trautman added an RBI triple for Churchill. Nate Hiestand had a two-run homer for the Millers in the first.

South Eugene 8, Thurston 6: Travis Rooke-Ley had an RBI triple and Ben Kiesse added a run-scoring double in a three-run sixth inning to lead the visiting Axemen to the win.

Sheldon 2, Willamette 1: Peter Jaeger's two-out, two-run single in the fifth inning lifted the Irish to the come-from-behind victory on the road. Alex Besaw scattered three hits in a complete game to pick up the win.

North Eugene 3, Lebanon 2: Andrew Stiltner singled in Dan Winterstein for the Highlanders' go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning.

Lowell 8, Mapleton 1: Daniel Casarez was 4-for-4 with three doubles and three RBIs to lead the Red Devils to the Trico League home win.


Churchill 12, Springfield 0: Kelly Dyer struck out 11 in a five-inning one-hitter, and she was 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the host Lancers to the Midwestern League win.

Thurston 12, South Eugene 0: Amanda Miller allowed only one hit over five innings for the visiting Colts, who scored nine runs in the third inning.

Sheldon 12, Willamette 0: Katie Steigleman was 3-for-3 with four RBIs, and Kaycee Gamez and Taylor Pangilinan added three RBIs apiece to lift the host Irish.

North Eugene 7, Lebanon 4: Kristen DeHaven was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and Megan Harvey was 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the host Highlanders.

Reedsport 7, Yoncalla 6: Chelsea Hitchcock had a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to score Deanne Huebner for the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning, lifting the Braves to the Big Fir road win.

Boys golf

Midwestern League: Phillip Bagdade and Jack Dukeminier each carded a 3-under 69 to give Sheldon a five-stroke lead after the first round of the district tournament at Tokatee Golf Club.

The defending state champions shot a 283. Marshfield is second at 288, followed by South Eugene at 292.

Bagdade and Dukeminier share the individual lead with Marshfield's Kyle Crawford and South's Alex Gruber heading into today's final round.

Sky-Em League: Jack Pennington carded a 1-over 73 and Robbie Pitts shot a 74 to give Marist the first-day lead at Tokatee Golf Club.

The Spartans shot a 304 overall and hold a 10-stroke lead over Siuslaw heading into today's final round. Siuslaw's Jesse Schutte, the two-time defending Class 3A state champion, carded a 67 to take a five-shot lead over Pleasant Hill's Alex Kirk.

Girls golf

Midwestern League: Marshfield recorded four scores in the 80s, including an 82 from Beka Young, to take a 15-shot lead after the first round of the district tournament at McKenzie River Golf Course.

Individually, South Eugene's Sophie Elstrott shot a 77 to take the lead into today's final round.

Sky-Em League: Ashley Elder shot a 91 and Alexis Pennington carded a 92 to help Marist to the first-day lead at the district tournament at Tokatee.

McKenzie's Ashley King shot a 79 to take an eight-shot lead over teammate Esther Kelso in the individual race.
