Lamb sale initiative named top rural project.

A PARTNERSHIP between Wales YFC, Dunbia of Llanybydder and Sainsbury's has been named Rural Youth Project of 2010. The award comes from Rural Youth Europe, the non-political governmental body of all young farmers and rural youth groups across Europe, which has 500,000 members in 25 national organisations. The project involves one of the UK's leading processors and one of the UK's top supermarkets and allows YFC members to supply Welsh lamb to Sainsbury stores in Wales.

Wales YFC also benefits by receiving 40p from Dunbia from every lamb sold through the scheme.

The initiative encourages young people to remain in the farming industry and offers a stepping stone for those trying to establish themselves as suppliers of Welsh lamb. It also gives young farmers the opportunity to take part in a training programme. Kadri Toomingas, Rural Youth Europe vice-chairman, said the project brings tangible benefits to members through innovative training and practical insight into the Welsh lamb industry, and also aims to promote local agriculture and change public attitudes towards local Welsh products.

He said: "A young person from Wales Young Farmers came up with the idea and young people are involved in the planning and implementation of the project. "The judges also appreciated the clear benefits for local communities in Wales and that the project is sustainable in both the short and long-term."

Rhys Evans, Wales YFC rural affairs chairman, thanked Sainsbury's and Dunbia for ensuring the success of the scheme. He said: "It has been a fantastic opportunity for Wales YFC, and we are delighted that the scheme is continuing to grow, not only for the members of the supply chain initiative, but it shows continued commitment for the development of the Welsh lamb industry from some of its key stakeholders."
