Fishing derby in Antioch:

The 58th Ice Fishing Derby and Winter Festival fundraiser by the Northern Illinois Conservation Club will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10 and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11 at the Thirsty Turtle Brew and View Pub on the west side of Channel Lake, 42273 N. Woodbine Ave., Antioch. The derby and festival is the longest run winter event in Illinois and NICC's major fundraiser. Tickets are $3 or two for $5. There will be hourly raffles and games for kids and adults. The club was established in 1960 to encourage education, conservation and preservation of wildlife and their habitat. Visit

CLC art exhibition:

An exhibit of paintings by Chicago artist Roland Kulla will open at the College of Lake County on Friday, Feb. 23, and run through Saturday, March 24. The exhibit will kick off with a reception at 6 p.m. Feb. 23 in the gallery, 19351 W. Washington St., Grayslake. The reception, which is free and open to the public, will include refreshments and live music.

Preparing for kindergarten:

The Nurture, Explore, Speak, Teach program wants to help future Hawthorn Elementary District 73 students acquire early literacy and language skills so they are prepared when they reach kindergarten. The program partners with WIC, Child and Family Connections, and the Cook Memorial Library District to identify and help parents access available resources to close experience and opportunity gaps. Free screenings for young children to determine their eligibility for early intervention services will be provided. Garden plot registration:

The Mundelein Park & Recreation District will open registration for garden plots on the southeast corner of Keith Mione Community Park, 1401 N. Midlothian Road, Mundelein, on Monday, Feb. 20. Key pickup will begin April 10, 2017. All garden plots require a deposit and a usage fee. Planting start date will be weather dependent. Customers will be notified by mail when the plots are ready. The Illinois Department of Transportation's website provides the latest on ongoing road construction, traffic volumes on state routes and the status of future projects. The site includes a modernized map highlighted by new aerial imagery and expanded points of interest, and consolidates information from a variety of IDOT bureaus. Users also can map trips to include stops at various points of interest across the state, including gas stations, restaurants, hotels, schools, government offices and museums.
