Lairds look for historic cup repeat; Corinthian.

Byline: Brian Flannagan

CARLSBERG West Cheshire League rivals Poulton Victoria and Cammell Laird will lock horns in the final of the Wirral Senior Cup, setting up a repeat of their 1979/80 clash which saw Lairds victorious.

Lairds' 2-2 draw with Heswall secured a narrow 4-3 aggregate win, while Poulton's 4-1 success at Mersey Royal turned round their 2-1 first leg defeat.

In the First Division, Christleton (Paul Hollifield) extended their advantage at the top to five points but will be disappointed with their 1-1 draw against Maghull (Horrigan), while efforts from Karl Thomas and Lee Evans gave lowly General Chemicals a vital 2-1 decision over Shell.

Ashville (Roberts 2) also boosted their survival chances with a 6-1 romp at doomed Mond Rangers, and Helsby had Gary Tyrell on the mark in their 1-1 stalemate with Vauxhall Motors Res.

New Brighton (Dave Hurley) climbed to second place in Division Two following a narrow 1-0 win over Cammell Laird Res, and a goal from Green gave Pavilions a hard earned 1-0 win at struggling Merseyside Police.

Blacon YC's promotion bid was stalled by a 1-1 draw at Capenhurst Villa (John Farrell), but Castrol Social's hopes were boosted by a 1-0 result at Ashville Res, Peter Boyle bagging the winner.

Maghull Reserves (Joe Hannah, Lee Hughes) opened up a huge 21-point gap at the top of Division Three following their 2-1 win against New Brighton Res.

But second placed Pensby had their keeper dismissed in a costly 0-0 stalemate at Grange Athletic, who also spurned a penalty opportunity.
