Lags to get DVD extras.

THE 1600 flat-screen TVs being bought with taxpayers' money for prisoners will have DVD players built in, it emerged yesterday.

The Scottish Prison Service confirmed they had upgraded the order for the tellies so lags can watch DVDs in their cells.

The DVD players must also be able to play music CDs.

Opposition MSPs were left raging on Saturday after the Record revealed that jail chiefs are ordering up to 1600 new TVs per year to keep Scotland's cons entertained.

The state-of-the-art 19-inch sets will replace conventional portables, and the order will cost an estimated pounds 250,000 per year.

Swanky Prison officials say the new TVs are "value for money" because they use less energy. And a spokesman said: "We charge prisoners to use them, so there's no cost to the taxpayer."

But Labour justice spokesman Richard Baker pointed out that taxpayers also fund the jail "wages" used by many cons to rent the tellies.

And when told about the DVDs, he said: "You couldn't make this up.

"Many of my constituents can't afford new televisions, particularly not swanky 19-inch flat-screen affairs with built-in DVD players.

"What sort of message does this send? This is the same Scottish government that is telling public sector workers to accept a pay freeze."
