La Liga: Fan Hits Lionel Messi In The Head With Water Bottle While Celebrating A Goal Against Valencia [VIDEO].
A Valencia supporter was on-target at the Mestalla on Monday (AEST), as his water bottle was able to find its way to the head of FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi.
Barca were celebrating the lone goal of the match, scored by Sergio Busquets on the rebound following a denial on Neymar, that came in injury time of the second-half when the captain for the night felt the power of the speeding projectile. It wasn't apparent at first, but a slow motion replay revealed the culprit of Messi's temporary dizziness.
The Catalan outfit were able to dominate possession throughout the game (71 per cent : 29 per cent) but failed to make the most out of such, having attempted only 11 shots (3 on target). Nevertheless, they converted the final and most important effort of them all.
Meamwhile, Los Che immediately issued a statement condemning such act, vowing to conduct an investigation to have the culprit commensurately penalized.
"Valencia CF regret and condemn the isolated incident in the game against FC Barcelona, in which a small, uncapped bottle of water was thrown from the stands at opposition player Lionel Messi," the statement read.
"The club will endeavour to locate the person who threw the bottle, and they will be banned for life from Mestalla. Valencia CF operate a zero tolerance policy on such actions and rigorously enforce all security measures set out by legislation."
