LYONDELL AND CDTECH TO COMMERCIALIZE ISOMERIZATION TECHNOLOGY

HOUSTON, Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Lyondell Licensing Inc. has entered into a joint development and licensing relationship with CDTECH to commercialize two isomerization processes that produce blending agents for cleaner burning fuels under the Clean Air Act.
Lyondell Licensing is a subsidiary of Lyondell Petrochemical Company (NYSE: LYO); CDTECH is a partnership between ABB Lummus Crest Inc. and Chemical Research & Licensing Co.
This alliance will accelerate worldwide commercialization of Lyondell's previously announced butene isomerization process and CDTECH's pentene isomerization process and result in a joint development effort aimed at improving these technologies.
A principal use of these technologies is for the production of oxygenated fuels required under the Clean Air Act. Demand for oxygenated gasolines is projected to rise dramatically in coming years. This alliance could contribute to the production of additional quantities of the blending agents needed to help meet the global demand for cleaner burning fuels.
"We are extremely pleased with this alliance with CDTECH, a world leader in the licensing of etherification technologies such as MTBE and TAME," said J. R. Fontenot, vice president of Lyondell Licensing and Technical Manager for Lyondell Petrochemical Company. "CDTECH provides us with a large worldwide client base and the ability to deliver comprehensive engineering and technical assistance for clients. The alliance will enable us to maximize early the value of Lyondell's isomerization technologies as well as participate in further developments in this important area."
Developed internally, Lyondell's butene isomerization technology utilizes a highly selective catalytic process while minimizing the production of lower value by-products. The process simplicity of the Lyondell technology results in significantly lower capital costs than other commercially available technologies. Lyondell successfully tested this new technology in the laboratory, pilot plant and a commercial- scale demonstration in 1992.
In announcing the collaboration effort of both companies, John Adams, CDTECH's managing director, commented that, "The combined resources of both companies brings forward a unique response to the industry's need to produce ethers in a more economic way. We are now in discussion with a number of refiners who had put their expansion plans on hold, waiting for the opportunity to implement this combined Lyondell/CDTECH solution."
Lyondell Petrochemical Company, headquartered in Houston, Texas, produces a wide variety of petrochemicals including olefins (primarily ethylene, propylene, butadiene and butylenes), methanol, MTBE and specialty products, polyethylene and polypropylene and refined petroleum products, including gasoline, heating oil, jet fuel, aromatics and lubricants. Lyondell Licensing Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary, licenses worldwide technology developed by Lyondell Petrochemical Company.
CDTECH (Catalytic Distillation Technologies) is a partnership between Chemical Research & Licensing Co. and ABB Lummus Crest Inc. CDTECH has become the world's leading supplier of ethers technologies used in the production of reformulated fuels.
