LYON'S $668.2 MILLION IN SALES VOLUME TOPS SOUTHLAND SURVEY
 FOR RECORD FIFTH STRAIGHT YEAR
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- With a dollar volume of $668.2 million in total sales for 1991, The William Lyon Co. is the Southland's No. 1 home builder for a record fifth consecutive year, according to the 21st annual Los Angeles Times survey of residential construction in Southern California.
The William Lyon Co. breaks its own record of being the survey's top builder for four consecutive years (1981-84 and 1987-90). Lyon's total volume sales more than doubled the No. 2 builder, Fieldstone Group.
The company has the distinction of finishing at the top of the Times' survey for an unprecedented ninth time in the past 11 years.
Lyon was also the survey leader with 3,738 total homes (including single-family, condominiums and apartments) constructed in 1991, nearly 2-1/2 times more than GBW Properties Inc.
The Southern California region covered in the Times' survey includes the following eight counties: Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Santa Barbara and Ventura, Calif.
"Actually, we finished 1991 more than $100 million above where we had projected at this time last year," said William Lyon, company chairman and chief executive officer. "Like most builders, we down- sized our plans for 1991 and concentrated more on the smaller affordable home rather than the mid- to luxury-priced residence.
"We're projecting to build approximately 1,966 homes in 1992 for an estimated volume of $450 million," Lyon said. "We are currently building homes in about three dozen neighborhoods, with prices ranging from the $120,000s for single-family detached homes at Amberwood in Temecula, Calif. to the high $300,000s for single-family detached homes at The Manors in the Hillsborough planned community in La Mirada."
Southern California operating divisions include: San Diego; Foothill/South Orange County; Saddleback/South Orange County; Central Counties; and Inland Empire.
In the first two months of 1992, Lyon reported 44,990 in visitor traffic and 382 new homes sales.
During more than 38 years of residential development, Lyon -- founder of the William Lyon Companies -- has directed the construction of over 70,000 homes, housing more than 200,000 people.
