LYNX SELECTED FOR DEFENSE COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM.
The IDM is a key component in the both US Army's Battlefield Digitization effort and similar efforts by the armed forces of any number of allied countries. The IDM is a digital modem that connects both Air Force and Army aviation platforms. This digital information is used to protect ground troops from improperly targeted smart weapons, improve radar data for targeting those weapons, and increase situational awareness.
The LynxOS real-time operating system was selected for the IDM upgrade program because it uniquely supported open systems standards such as IEEE 1003.1 (POSIX), and BSD 4.4 socket network interfaces.
LynxOS will allow ICI to provide an open system solution to military digital communications. This is in line with US military initiatives and directives such as the Open Systems Joint Task Force, the Joint Technical Architecture, and the Defense Information Infrastructure Common Operating Environment.
"Lynx has a long tradition of delivering a strong software foundation for next-generation command and control (C2) applications," said John Seaton, vice president marketing for Lynx. "ICI took an innovative approach in deploying the Lynx commercial off-the-shelf technology to address this design challenge."
"The goals of these initiatives is to move away from proprietary closed interfaces to open interfaces," said Bob Woodward, program director for NetworkCommunications Systems at ICI. "Open systems eliminate the need for unique solutions to common problems. The LynxOS real-time operating system allows system developers to achieve real-time performance with open system interfaces. By using LynxOS, ICI gets the best of both worlds."
ICI is a technology applications development firm with a design and deployment of avionics and space-qualified communication systems. Corporate capabilities span systems engineering, software engineering, hardware development, radiation science and technology, and information technology.
