LYNNE V. CHENEY ELECTED TO READER'S DIGEST BOARD

 PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y., Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Lynne V. Cheney, departing chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), has been elected a director of The Reader's Digest Association, Inc. (NYSE: RDA, RDB), effective Jan. 21, it was announced today by George V. Grune, Reader's Digest chairman and chief executive officer.
 Cheney, 51, has chaired the NEH -- the independent federal agency supporting education, research, preservation and public programs in the humanities -- since 1986. On Jan. 21, she joins the American Enterprise Institute as a W.H. Brady, Jr. Distinguished Fellow.
 "Lynne Cheney has been a forceful and distinguished advocate for research and education in the humanities," Grune said in making the announcement. "She brings extraordinary talents and a special perspective to our already strong and active board of directors.

 Cheney has written six major reports on U.S. education, identifying problems and recommending higher standards. Under her leadership, the NEH has launched a number of programs aimed at improving American education, including efforts to set standards of knowledge in subjects for students in the fourth, eighth and twelfth grades. Cheney often has written and spoken in the media about American education and the values of the humanities in professional and personal life.
 Before she joined the NEH, Cheney was a college teacher, magazine editor, author of two novels and co-author of a third. With her husband, Secretary of Defense Richard B. Cheney, she wrote a history of the U.S. House of Representatives.
 A Wyoming native, Cheney holds a doctorate, with specialization in 19th-century British literature, from the University of Wisconsin and has been awarded a dozen honorary degrees.
