LYKES MAKES MILLION DOLLAR PLEDGE TO BERKELEY
TAMPA, Fla., May 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Lykes Bros. Inc. will donate

$1 million to Berkeley Preparatory School for construction of a performing arts/auditorium complex on the school's Tampa campus. Lykes' million dollar pledge, in the form of a challenge grant requiring Berkeley to raise an additional $1 million in matching money, was announced by Berkeley Headmaster Joseph Merluzzi and Lykes Bros. Chairman Tom L. Rankin.
Merluzzi said, "The Lykes family has been an important part of the Berkeley community since the school's beginning. The positive involvement of the members of the Lykes family in virtually every area of the school has helped us achieve the success we enjoy today -- namely, that of a pre-eminent college preparatory school with a rigorous curriculum and a multitude of co-curricular activities offered by inspiring professionals in an atmosphere that fosters excellence."
All Berkeley graduates attend college and many are accepted by some of the country's finest colleges and universities. SAT scores at Berkeley are consistently above the national average. Berkeley student names are prominent on lists of National Merit Finalists and Commended Students, Presidential Scholar Finalists, National Hispanic Scholars Finalists, Finalists in the National Achievement Scholarship Program for Outstanding Negro Students, and Florida Academic Scholars.
"We make this pledge in recognition of the academic excellence of Berkeley," Rankin said. "This contribution continues Lykes Bros.' commitment to education and to the future of the Tampa Bay Area. Our company has a history of supporting the communities in which we do business, and supporting education in particular. For when we contribute to the education of young people, we make a long term investment in the well-being of the community," Rankin said.
Lykes contributions to education include the ongoing Lykes Memorial Scholarship Program which offers both a two-year and a four- year college scholarship to high school graduates in each of five Florida counties -- Glades, Highlands, Hillsborough, Indian River, and Pasco -- plus the City of Tampa. Scholarships also are offered in Texas and in Georgia, bringing the total to 16 scholarships in three states. The Lykes Chair in Banking and Finance at the University of South Florida was endowed by Lykes Bros. Inc. and affiliated companies in 1980.
Lykes Bros. is a privately held, diversified corporation headquartered in Tampa and engaged in agriculture as well as the processing, distribution, and sales of meat and citrus products.
