LYKES BROS. INC. DONATES COASTAL WETLANDS FOR UNIVERSITY RESEARCH
TAMPA, March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Lykes Bros. Inc. today announced the gift of a 40-acre tract of land on Galveston Island to the Texas A&M University College of Marine Sciences in Galveston, Texas. The announcement was made in Tampa by Lykes Bros. Chairman and CEO Tom L. Rankin.
Rankin said the gift of land on the West Bay side of Galveston Island is a part of the ongoing relationship the Lykes family has enjoyed with Galveston since 1905, when the late James M. Lykes Sr., one of the original Lykes brothers, arrived there to start a cattle trading operation which later expanded into a steamship company, now known as Lykes Bros. Steamship Co., Inc. In past years, Lykes Bros. Inc. has been a continuing supporter of the Maritime Museum in the Rosenberg Library and Project Elissa, both in Galveston.
"Texas A&M University at Galveston plans to use the valuable coastal wetland and barrier island land, generously donated by Lykes Bros. Inc., to initiate long term scientific research programs," said James. M. McCloy, the university's vice president for academic affairs.
"These programs will include research on sea grass growth; wetland sediment fluctuations; the impact of hydrocarbons on marshes; and documentation of the health and vitality of a portion of the coastal zone which is minimally impacted by man," McCloy said.
"The acreage also will be utilized in several courses to teach students how to observe and measure phenomena in the field," McCloy said.
In conclusion, Rankin said Lykes Bros. Inc. continues to be sensitive to environmental issues concerning its ownership of land, whether in Texas or Florida, and this gift is another step in the company's process of evaluating and addressing the ecological issues pertaining to such ownership.
