LUXEON(R) LEDs Deliver Market's Most Rugged Package; No Field Failures in Seven Years.
The patented package design of high-power LUXEON(R) LEDs from Lumileds Lighting is yielding major long-term performance benefits for customers, including one company that has not had a single LED-related field failure in seven years of building LUXEON-based traffic signals. The LUXEON(R) lensing system, heat dissipation capabilities, zero-stress technology and other factors associated with the engineering of the package combine to maximize the effective life of the LED and prevent premature breakdowns.
Dialight Corporation has experienced those benefits since 1998 through the manufacture of traffic signals and other products. Since adopting LUXEON(R) technology, Dialight has used in excess of 17 million LUXEON(R) light sources without incident or failure.
"We use LUXEON(R) LEDs because they can withstand environmental extremes, dissipate heat more effectively, and handle more current without degradation," said Gary Durgin, Dialight Vice President of Strategic Business Planning. "These are vital features when you're talking about a mission-critical application like a traffic signal. Having a sudden failure not only requires that traffic departments drop everything and replace the light. It can cause an accident. It is simply not acceptable."
The ruggedness of the LUXEON(R) package stems from features including:
--Silicon lensing -- While the lensing systems of conventional LEDs use an epoxy that discolors and reduces the usable life of the LED, LUXEON(R) LEDs employ a special silicon-based encapsulation system that eliminates discoloration and contributes to LUXEON's industry-leading 70% lumen maintenance at 50,000 hours.
--Thermal management -- LUXEON(R) LEDs offer industry-leading maximum junction temperature, exceptional thermal resistance, and a package design that maximizes heat dissipation, enabling efficient and effective operation in high heat environments.
--Zero-Stress -- LUXEON's encapsulation system provides a zero-stress environment on the die and wire bonds, increasing the package robustness and reliability. Other LEDs employ a rigid epoxy material to surround the die and wire bonds that can put stresses on the die attach, wire bonds and semiconductor material. LUXEON's stress-free environment enables higher junction temperature operation and delivers reliability in harsh environments such as power temperature cycling.
"Dialight's traffic signals bake in the sun and freeze in the snow, day after day and year after year," noted Jason Posselt, Director of Product Marketing for Lumileds Lighting. "The fact that LUXEON(R) emitters can maintain their performance under these conditions proves that they can survive anywhere, and that is directly connected to the way they are engineered. Not all high-power LEDs are created equal, as Dialight has discovered firsthand."
LUXEON(R) LEDs are also the world's brightest, field-proven high-power LEDs, and the only LEDs that utilize a proprietary conformal coating to deliver uniformly white emitters without color shifts in the beam pattern.
LUXEON(R) K2, the next generation of high-power LEDs, will significantly advance solid-state technology and deliver never-before-possible light output, thermal capabilities and durability.
The LUXEON(R) family comes both as single unmounted emitters and in a wide variety of mounted configurations. LUXEON(R) products are distributed exclusively through Future Electronics (www.lumiledsfuture.com or 1-800-FUTURE1).
