LUKENS TO ENTER STAINLESS STEEL CUT PLATE MARKET

COATESVILLE, Pa., Aug. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Lukens Inc. (NYSE: LUC) today announced plans for its Washington Steel Group to begin manufacturing and selling stainless steel cut plate in the fourth quarter of 1993.
The new Washington Steel product line will be produced at various Lukens Inc. facilities.
"Our diversification into the $300 million stainless cut plate market at this time is preemptive to the start-up of our new SMART(TM) plate and sheet processing system late in 1994," said R.W. Van Sant, Lukens chairman and chief executive officer. "The system will produce a broad line of high quality stainless plate products to meet our customers' expanding needs. Entering the stainless plate market early also helps us maintain the company's share of stainless rolling in the face of recently announced changes in the stainless marketplace."
Acquired by Lukens in April 1992, Washington Steel currently produces a full range of stainless sheet, strip and coil plate at facilities in Washington and Houston, Pa., and Massillon, Ohio. Until now, Lukens has produced stainless cut plate only on a conversion basis -- rolling and finishing steel plate to be sold by other steelmakers -- some of whom have begun acquiring their own stainless rolling capabilities," said Van Sant.
Principal end uses for stainless cut plate include the construction of process vessels for the chemical and pulp and paper industries, as well as stack liners and other environmental control systems. Production and distribution activities associated with the new product line are not anticipated to have a significant impact on 1993 earnings.
Lukens Inc. is a Fortune 500 company whose subsidiaries supply carbon, alloy and clad plate steels; stainless steel sheet, strip and continuous mill plate; and industrial products and services.
