LUKENS SHIPS ABOUT 11,900 TONS DURING WEEK OF NOV. 18

LUKENS SHIPS ABOUT 11,900 TONS DURING WEEK OF NOV. 18
COATESVILLE, Pa., Nov. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Lukens Steel Co. shipped about 11,900 tons of steel during the week beginning Nov. 18, according to Robert Schaal, president and chief operating officer.
"As of last week, we have shipped more than 80,000 tons of steel since the steelworkers strike began," Schaal said as the walk-out entered its ninth week. "The numbers indicate to me that the flow of steel leaving our plants has grown since the strike began and has continued at a respectable rate in recent weeks. We are achieving our objective of keeping and serving our customers despite the continuing labor dispute."
New orders for the week of Nov. 18 amounted to more than 10,600 tons, bringing the total of orders since the strike began to about 85,000 tons. "Our order receipts are down somewhat from the week of November 11, when we received orders for more than 15,000 tons," Schaal said, "but that was an exceptional week. Last week's order number reflects a more normal rate of business."
According to Schaal, Lukens Electric Melt Shop last week produced new steel at about 54 percent of pre-strike levels. "Increasing melt shop production is a very important aspect of our plans to continue serving our customers' needs during the strike," Schaal said. "We plan to boost production by extending melt shop hours to three shifts a day, five days a week by December 1." Schaal indicated that the company is optimistic about reaching its target of being able to produce 85 percent pre-strike production by Dec. 1.
