LUKENS SHIPS 11,500 TONS DURING WEEK OF DEC. 2
COATESVILLE, Pa., Dec. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Lukens Steel Co. shipped

about 11,500 tons of steel and received new orders for 11,600 tons during the week beginning Dec. 2, according to Robert Schaal, president and chief operating officer.
"With last week's shipments, we have moved more than 100,000 tons of steel to our customers since the strike began," said Schaal as the strike by more than 1,200 union steelworkers entered its 11th week.
Schaal noted that new orders for the week, at 11,600 tons, also pushed the current total past the 100,000-ton mark. "Having three shifts working in most of our production areas has helped us keep a consistent pace that allows us to ship most of our orders on time," Schaal said. "This strategy has been particularly helpful in retaining customers who have been placing new orders on a fairly consistent basis."
Schaal said today that 110 union members had returned to work in the Coatesville plant as financial core members of union Local 1165. Adding to that the number of temporary replacement and salaried workers, the mill's manufacturing work force consists of more than 800 workers.
Representatives of Lukens and United Steelworkers of America are scheduled to meet with a federal mediator in Philadelphia on Wednesday, Dec. 11. Lukens and the union last met on Nov. 21, when talks broke down after the union presented a counter-proposal that was unacceptable to the company.
