LUKENS ANNOUNCES $14.5 MILLION STAINLESS MELTING FACILITY

COATESVILLE, Pa., Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Lukens Inc. (NYSE: LUC) board of directors has approved capital expenditures of $14.5 million to install stainless steel refining equipment at its Lukens Steel melting facilities in Coatesville.
"The new project represents the centerpiece of our strategy to enter the stainless plate market," said R.W. Van Sant, chairman and chief executive officer. "With this new refining capability at Coatesville and our stainless melt shop at Washington Steel's Houston, Pa., facility, we'll have the flexibility to leverage our stainless production for the lowest cost and highest productivity."
Lukens' Coatesville facility will become the only plate mill in the United States that melts carbon, alloy and stainless steels.
"The nine-inch by 85-inch slabs produced on Coatesville's continuous caster will enable us to provide stainless plate, slabs and/or sheet to the stainless market and maximize operating efficiencies," said Van Sant.
The key element of the project is a Vacuum Oxygen Decarburization (VOD) system. Installed with existing melting and casting operations, the VOD will refine stainless as well as carbon and alloy steels.
Additional manufacturing enhancements include alterations to cutting equipment to accommodate stainless slab production, the installation of computer automated systems and new handling equipment for raw materials.
Scheduled for operation in the first quarter of 1995, the investment will significantly increase Lukens' stainless melt capacity; ensure more consistent, reproducible chemistries; and produce the largest stainless cast slabs in North America.
The project is another important step in Lukens' strategy to integrate its five production facilities. The company's Conshohocken facility will provide the newest stainless processing and finishing technologies with an $86 million advanced Steckel mill rolling system currently under construction. Stainless plate manufactured by Lukens will be marketed and sold by the Washington Steel commercial organization.
"This combination of flexible, high-technology facilities will position Lukens as a leading North American stainless plate producer," said Van Sant. "We'll enjoy the capability to make high-quality stainless, carbon and alloy steel products at cost levels competitive throughout the world."
Lukens Inc. is a Fortune 500 company whose subsidiaries supply carbon, alloy and clad plate steels; stainless steel sheet, strip and continuous mill products; and industrial products and services.
