 LUCKY STORES OPENS TWO WAREHOUSE FORMAT STORES;
 CONSUMERS MAXIMIZE SAVINGS AND SERVICE AT 'MAX PAK' STORES
 LAS VEGAS, Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- In a ground-breaking move for the grocery industry, Lucky Stores today announced the grand re- opening of two of its Las Vegas area supermarkets as combination warehouse/traditional format stores. The Lucky "Max Pak" stores, located at 4420 E. Bonanza and 2300 E. Tropicana, are a pilot test offering the wide variety of bulk and multi-pack products found in warehouse stores, combined with the high level of selection and service found in a traditional full-service supermarket -- under a single roof.
 The Bonanza Road store is set to open today, and the Tropicana Road store will follow on Friday, Oct. 30.
 "Lucky's emphasis has always been on providing everyday lower prices. Now we're taking that commitment one step further," says Robert P. Hermanns, general manager and executive vice president of Lucky Stores' Southern California division. "These new Lucky Stores are an entirely new concept -- a warehouse store-within-a-store offering shoppers the best of all worlds."
 Nearly one-quarter of the floor space of the two Lucky Stores has been converted to a no-frills warehouse-style format, including industrial grade shelving, sturdier flooring and minimal aisle signage. This area is exclusively designated for bulk and multi-pack grocery, frozen food, health and beauty products, office supplies, books and videos. The balance of the floor space remains in the style of a traditional Lucky supermarket.
 "The consumer is benefiting doubly here," Hermanns says. "The prices of products sold in our warehouse area will be equal to or lower than those found in warehouse or club stores, without membership fees or special requirements to enter the store. At the same time, we will maintain the high level of service, selection and convenience consumers expect from Lucky."
 Hermanns says the new Lucky stores will offer many services which are not part of warehouse or club stores, including the acceptance of major credit cards and ATM cards, no-hassle check cashing, use of manufacturer's coupons, guaranteed speedy checkout, 24-hour service, and perishable and service departments, such as meat and seafood.
 The new store concept is an outgrowth of the Max Pak program currently available in all Lucky supermarkets. The Max Pak program consists of one or two aisles of each supermarket dedicated to name brand products sold in multi-packs at considerable savings over single product purchases.
 The growing trend in warehouse and club shopping led to Lucky's decision to expand the program by opening the new pilot Lucky "Max Pak" stores. If successful, Lucky will consider modeling more of its existing stores in a similar fashion.
 Lucky Stores, a wholly owned subsidiary of American Stores (NYSE: ASC), is California's largest supermarket chain and is currently operating more than 400 stores in California and Southern Nevada.
