LUCAS AUTOMOTIVE SUPPLYING JAPANESE TRANSPLANTS WITH DISC AND DRUM
BRAKES PRODUCED AT U.S.-BASED MANUFACTURING FACILITIES
TROY, Mich., March 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Over the past 10 years, the Lucas Chassis Systems division of Lucas Automotive Inc. has assembled the best manufacturing techniques from around the world to meet the increasing process control and quality demands of the North American automotive and truck industries.
In 1982, Lucas built a manufacturing facility in Cincinnati to supply Ford's Kentucky Truck Plant with DURAPARK(TM) drum brakes for their 1983 Medium Duty Truck models. This Lucas complex has undergone several expansions to accommodate some of today's best flexible manufacturing equipment and systems for producing a wide variety of car and truck drum brakes.
Currently the Lucas facility is manufacturing drum brakes for the Ford Escort, Mercury Tracer and DURAPARK brakes to KTP. Lucas has received additional drum brake contracts from Ford for a 1994 1/2 Model Year program and from Mazda to fit the new 1992 1/2 MX-6 and 626 vehicles being manufactured in Flat Rock, Mich. The brakes to be supplied to Mazda are a new 9-inch design featuring a significant weight and cost savings. This is the first time a car line built in the U.S. by a Japanese company has qualified for CAFE regulations complying with 75 percent North American content.
In 1987, Lucas and Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd. formed Lucas Sumitomo Brakes, Inc., a joint venture to manufacture front disc brakes at a new manufacturing facility in Lebanon, Ohio. This facility combined the best manufacturing technology and working practices from Japan, Europe and the United States. This includes the J.I.T. method of machining from Japan; assembly systems technology from Europe and the U.S.A.; and special metal plating process technology from the U.S.A.
Lucas Sumitomo Brakes Inc. is currently manufacturing front disc brakes for the Ford Escort and Mercury Tracer. LSBI has recently been awarded additional contracts from Ford, Volkswagen and Nummi for front disc brakes. The Nummi contract is for the new 1993 pick-up truck produced at the General Motors/Toyota joint venture in Fremont, Calif. This program will also include exporting of the U.S.-manufactured brakes back to Japan.
Lucas and Lucas Sumitomo Brakes Inc. continue to emphasize the environmental, safety and quality demands for their braking products in the growing North American market.
