LTV STEEL TO CLOSE COKE PLANT IN CLEVELAND

LTV STEEL TO CLOSE COKE PLANT IN CLEVELAND
CLEVELAND, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- LTV Steel today notified

employees and steelworkers union representatives of the company's intention to cease operations at the Cleveland Works No. 2 Coke Plant by the end of 1992.
"The capital requirements and operating costs for the future operation of the 40-year-old coke plant are prohibitive," said William G. Wiley, senior vice president-flat rolled products, "particularly when the capital availability of the company and the demands of stricter environmental requirements are considered."
Employees will be assigned to other jobs that become available through attrition, and it is expected that a substantial number of employees will retire under the improved pension and insurance benefit provisions of the new labor agreement.
Closure of the No. 2 Coke Plant will reduce by 29 percent the environmental releases reported for 1991 by the Cleveland Works. LTV Steel coke plants in Warren, Ohio and Pittsburgh will supply the coke requirements of the Cleveland Works blast furnaces.
LTV Steel is the leading manufacturer of high-quality engineered flat rolled and tubular steel products for demanding customer applications. It is the only steel company in the world to guarantee total customer satisfaction.
