LTV GETS $131.8 MILLION IN CONTRACTS FOR ARMY ROCKET SYSTEM PRODUCTION
DALLAS, Dec. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- LTV Aerospace and Defense announced today that its Missiles Division has received two contracts valued at $131.8 million for production of the Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) for the U.S. Army.
One contract for $88.9 million will fund production of more than 20,000 MLRS rockets and a second contract for $42.9 million will fund production of 43 launchers and 86 trainers. The contracts are for the fourth year of a $942 million five-year contract awarded by the U.S. Army Missile Command in 1989.
Work will be performed principally at the Missiles Division's Camden, Ark., manufacturing facility with the remainder to be completed at the division's headquarters near Dallas. Delivery of the MLRS rockets is to be completed by January 1994 and delivery of the launchers and trainers is to be completed by July 1994.
During Operations Desert Storm, the Iraqis called MLRS "steel rain." A U.S. artillery corps commander said simply, "The MLRS was the most devastating weapon over there."
MLRS is a highly mobile automatic rocket system that permits its crew of three, with a minimum amount of training, to accurately shoot a complete 12-rocket load, quickly reload and fire again.
LTV Aerospace and Defense manufactures missiles, rocket and space systems; military vehicles; and subassemblies for military and commercial aircraft. The 20th largest defense contractor in the United States, it is a subsidiary of The LTV Corporation (NYSE: QLTV), a Dallas-based diversified manufacturing company also involved in steel and energy products.
