LTV GETS $127 MILLION CONTRACT FOR ARMY MISSILE PRODUCTION

LTV GETS $127 MILLION CONTRACT FOR ARMY MISSILE PRODUCTION
DALLAS, Dec. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- LTV Aerospace and Defense announced that its Missiles Division has received a $127 million production contract from the U.S. Army for the Army Tactical Missile System.
The fixed-price production contract for the first year will fund 300 Army TACMS guided missile and launching assemblies. The total contract amount for the first year is $127 million, $13 million of which has already been advanced to LTV.
The contract includes two one-year renewal options and a clause that allows for conversion to a multiyear production contract if congressional approval is granted on or before Feb. 15, 1992. Total contract value for the work yet to be completed is approximately $407 million.
The work will be performed principally at the Missiles Division headquarters near Dallas. Final assembly of the missiles will be done at LTV's El Paso, Texas, facility. Delivery is expected to begin in October 1992 and end in September 1993 on the contract for the first year.
With its deployment in Operation Desert Storm, Army TACMS was the first tactical surface-to-surface missile ever fired in combat by U.S. forces. Identified by the Army as a "precious asset," production was accelerated so that the missile could be used against "high-priority" targets, including air defense sites and command installations -- all of which were destroyed or rendered inoperable.
LTV won the competition to design and produce Army TACMS in March 1986 after almost a decade of research and testing. Each missile is approximately 13 feet long, two feet in diameter and has a range of more than 60 miles (100-plus kilometers).
Each missile contains approximately 950 bomblets which disperse over the target area and detonate upon impact. A single missile can defeat company-size targets beyond the range of current Army cannons, rockets and Lance missiles.
Army TACMS is fired from an M270 weapons platform which also fires Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) rockets. The launcher can carry two of the missiles or 12 MLRS rockets in a full load. The M270 launcher and MLRS rockets are produced at LTV's East Camden, Ark., operation.
Key features of the missile include a solid fuel rocket motor and a ring laser gyro inertial guidance unit.
Atlantic Research Corporation of Alexandria, Va., is the rocket motor supplier. The Military Avionics Division of Honeywell, Inc., in Clearwater, Fla., produces the guidance unit.
LTV Aerospace and Defense manufactures missile, rocket and space systems; military vehicles; and subassemblies for military and commercial aircraft. The 20th largest defense contractor in the United States, it is a subsidiary of The LTV Corporation, a Dallas-based diversified manufacturing company also involved in steel and energy products.
