LTV'S MLRS ACHIEVES 50TH RELIABILITY TEST SUCCESS

LTV'S MLRS ACHIEVES 50TH RELIABILITY TEST SUCCESS
DALLAS, Aug. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Thanks to series of successful

flight tests, the Missiles Division of LTV Aerospace and Defense has produced 50 consecutive lots of Multiple Launch Rocket System rockets that have passed flight tests on the first attempt.
The 50th successful flight test occurred on Aug. 12 at White Sands Missile Range, N.M.
LTV participates in a fly-to-buy program, in which rockets from each 3,000-rocket lot are randomly selected for Army testing. These rockets are fired and scored for accuracy, reliability and safety. Lots that do not meet the performance standards must be successfully retested before being sold to the government.
The 50 successful flight tests represent approximately 150,000 rockets that have been produced since 1989.
"This milestone is demonstrated proof of the quality our employees build into the MLRS system," said Wilbur Cummings, vice president for MLRS programs. "The Army's stringent testing requirements assure that MLRS will perform reliably anywhere in the world, just as it did during Operation Desert Storm."
Rocket Lot 164, which was tested Wednesday, was the 50th consecutive lot to pass on the first attempt. The last rocket lot requiring a retest was Lot 114, flown in 1989. The lot passed on its second attempt in September of that year.
MLRS is a highly mobile rocket system that permits its crew of three to accurately shoot a complete 12-rocket load in less than a minute, quickly reload and fire again. A single MLRS launcher can deliver more than two tons of destructive firepower on targets up to 20 miles away.
LTV Aerospace and Defense manufactures missile, rocket and space systems; and subassemblies for military and commercial aircraft. The 17th largest defense contractor in the United States, it is a subsidiary of The LTV Corporation, a Dallas-based diversified manufacturing company also involved in steel and energy products.
