 MILPITAS, Calif., and GLENVIEW, Ill., Nov. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- In a move expected to accelerate the deployment of high-performance, cost- effective digital cable television systems, Zenith Electronics Corp. (NYSE: ZE) and LSI Logic Corp. (NYSE: LSI) have formed an alliance to develop advanced integrated circuitry for digital cable TV boxes.
 Under an agreement announced today, Zenith will work with LSI Logic to develop a chip to be used in digital decoders based on Zenith's unique 16-level vestigial sideband (16-VSB) digital transmission systems. These systems significantly increase the amount of digital information that can be transmitted on cable TV systems without additional video compression -- expanding the capabilities of digital cable TV systems beyond the expected 500 channels to 1,000 or more channels.
 "The powerful combination of LSI Logic's integrated circuit design expertise and Zenith's experience in communications systems technology will help the cable TV and telecommunications industries launch cost- effective digital transmission systems beginning next year," said Wayne C. Luplow, Zenith's division vice president of advanced television R&D.
 Zenith said it plans to use LSI Logic's chip in its digital cable TV decoders scheduled for introduction in 1994. Zenith also will license its 16-VSB technology to other manufacturers of digital decoders, and LSI Logic will sell the chips as application specific standard products (ASSPs) or customized ASSPs to Zenith licensees.
 The 16-VSB digital transmission system can deliver as many as 23 movies or nine live video programs (such as sports events), in each 6-MHz channel. The system can also send two digital high-definition television (HDTV) signals on a single 6-MHz analog cable channel.
 Extensive laboratory and field tests of the 16-VSB system, conducted this year by Denver-based Cable Television Laboratories Inc. and Videoway Communications Inc. in Montreal, showed that the system can transmit and receive 43 megabits-per-second of digital data in a single 6-MHz channel.
 Zenith's demodulation system works with an MPEG decoder, both of which reside inside the digital decoder box. The purpose of the demodulation subsystem is to recover the digital bitstream from the transmitted signal. This digital signal is then fed into the MPEG decoder, which decompresses the data to deliver video to the TV.
 The jointly developed chip, based on LSI Logic's proprietary Reed-Solomon forward error correction (FEC) and optimized demodulation building blocks, will handle forward error correction, adaptive equalization, synchronization detection and other key functions of Zenith's VSB demodulation system.
 The chip also can switch from 16-VSB to 8-VSB for those few cable systems that require increased ruggedness. (The 8-VSB systems offer the equivalent data rate to 64-QAM; 16-VSB's data rate is the equivalent of what would be 256-QAM approach.)
 "We have evaluated implementations of both VSB and QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) approaches to digital transmission, and we believe VSB offers a superior solution," said Peng Ang, vice president of digital video products at LSI Logic.
 "The combination of Zenith's unique 16-VSB technology and LSI Logic's advanced CoreWare system-on-a-chip methodology will enable us to develop a solution which will be very attractive to manufacturers racing to achieve cost-effective, high-performance digital decoders within a year."
 LSI Logic also announced a family of MPEG products including an MPEG video decoder, MPEG audio decoder and a family of Reed-Solomon decoders/encoders in February 1993.
