LOWE'S ANNOUNCES DECEMBER SALES

 NORTH WILKESBORO, N.C., Dec. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Lowe's Companies, Inc. (NYSE: LOW) announced its December sales totaled $310.8 million, a 33 percent increase over December of 1991. Retail sales increased 35 percent and sales to contractors increased 26 percent.

 Management commented that the December, 1990 comparable week's sales were $ 30.3 million retail, $ 8.0 million contractor, and $ 38.3 million total.
 The two-year compound growth rates in weekly sales are: Retail, + 37 percent; Contractor, + 26 percent; and Total, + 35 percent. The December 1990 comparable week's sales were from 306 stores.
 Lowe's is a specialty retailer serving the home center do-it- yourself business, the consumer durables business, and the building contractor business. Lowe's operates 305 stores in 20 states.
