 LOWE'S ANNOUNCES APRIL SALES UP 22 PERCENT
 NORTH WILKESBORO, N.C., May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Lowe's Companies, Inc.


(NYSE: LOW) announced its April sales totaled $405.6 million, a 22 percent increase over April of 1991. Retail sales increased 21 percent and sales to contractors increased 24 percent.

 Management commented that the April, 1990 comparable week's sales were $ 43.0 million retail, $ 21.6 million contractor, and $ 64.6 million total. The two-year compound growth rates in weekly sales are: Retail, + 15 percent; Contractor, + 11 percent; and Total, + 14 percent. The April 1990 comparable week's sales were from 306 stores.
 Lowe's monthly sales report series will continue to summarize four-week, four-week, and five-week totals, including comparable store sales results. Lowe's quarterly news releases of sales and earnings will continue to present precise calendar totals.
 A new store opened in Chancellor, Virginia in April. Relocated stores opened in Macon, Georgia and Monroe, North Carolina. A door and millwork facility in Dallas was closed in April.
 Lowe's is a specialty retailer serving the home center do-it-yourself business, the consumer durables business, and the building contractor business. Lowe's operates 307 stores in 20 states.
