LOW-PRESSURE OXO ALCOHOLS PLANT TO BE BUILT IN SAUDI ARABIA
DANBURY, Conn., April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Union Carbide Corporation (NYSE: UK), Davy Process Technology, and Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) jointly announced today that SABIC has licensed the Union Carbide/Davy/Johnson Matthey low-pressure oxo technology for a new world-scale, state-of-the-art oxo alcohols plant at Al-Jubail, Saudi Arabia.
The plant, the first oxo alcohols facility in Saudi Arabia, will have an annual production capacity of 150,000 metric tons, and will manufacture 2-ethylhexanol. It is to be built by Al-Jubail Fertilizer Company (SAMAD), a joint venture of SABIC and Taiwan Fertilizer Company, Ltd. Design work is under way by Davy Process Technology, London, England, and the plant is due on stream by mid-1994.
The SAMAD plant will be the 15th low-pressure oxo facility licensed in 12 countries using the Union Carbide/Davy/Johnson Matthey LP Oxo technology. Current output of existing facilities using this technology is more than two million metric tons per year and represents over 50 percent of the worldwide production of propylene-based oxo products. Union Carbide has a major oxo alcohols facility at its Texas City, Texas, plant.
Propylene feedstock for the new plant will be from Petrokemya at Al-Jubail. The plant includes a natural gas-based steam reforming unit to produce the synthesis gas and hydrogen required for the production of 2-ethylhexanol. Plant output will be taken by SABIC Marketing, Ltd., and Taiwan Fertilizer. Principal use of 2-ethylhexanol is in production of the phthalate ester DOP, used in the manufacture of plasticized polyvinyl chloride.
Both Union Carbide and Davy said they were gratified that SAMAD has chosen the LP Oxo technology for this important new plant. Union Carbide and Davy Process Technology continue to dedicate significant research and development resources for the ongoing improvement of the process, which will make the new plant truly state-of-the-art.
