LOVE & MERCY (12A) .....

PAUL Dano, John Cusack and some seriously bad vibrations come together in this fascinating look at the life of Beach Boy Brian Wilson.

Named after one of his best known solo records, the film looks behind the sun and surf to examine one of rock's most gifted but troubled characters.

Concentrating on two key periods of the musician's life, the story begins in the mid-60s as Wilson, (Dano) struggles to complete his masterpieces - the Pet Sounds album and Good Vibrations single - before battles with his bandmates, drugs and mental illness sinks the mythical follow-up LP, Smile.

Weaved into this tale of creative burnout is the story of how, in the mid-80s, Wilson's future wife Melinda (Elizabeth Banks) rescues him from the clutches of shady shrink Eugene Landy (Paul Giamatti).

While Giamatti has the showiest part, Dano is the star for his eerily-accurate evocation of Wilson at his peak while Cusack, playing him during his 80s funk, is better than he's been in ages.

Throw in a killer soundtrack and this is guaranteed to make you smile from ear to ear.
