 LOUIS R. HUGHES NAMED VICE PRESIDENT OF GENERAL MOTORS
 ZURICH, Switzerland, March 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The following was


released today by GM Europe:
 Louis R. Hughes, chairman and managing director of Adam Opel AG, the General Motors subsidiary in Germany, has been elected a vice president of the corporation by the GM board of directors.
 In announcing the board action, GM Chairman Robert C. Stempel said, "The promotion of Lou Hughes to corporate vice president recognizes the contributions of the entire Opel organization to the outstanding results that GM Europe continues to produce. On a personal basis, it also reflects Lou's continuing, dynamic leadership of the Opel team."
 Hughes, 43, joined GM in 1966 and earned a degree in mechanical engineering from General Motors Institute and an MBA from Harvard. He held a number of posts in the GM Treasurer's Office, and in 1982 was promoted to assistant treasurer with general responsibility for international activities involving financing and new business ventures.
 In 1985, he transferred to GM of Canada as vice president of finance and became a member of their board of directors. He moved to Zurich in 1987 where he was promoted to vice president of finance for GM Europe. He was named to his present post at Opel in 1989.
