LOTTO JACKPOT ESTIMATE HIT BY HURRICANE ANDREW

LOTTO JACKPOT ESTIMATE HIT BY HURRICANE ANDREW
TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The Florida Lottery

revised the LOTTO jackpot estimate for Saturday's drawing in the wake of the tragic devastation in South Florida from Hurricane Andrew.
The estimated jackpot of $6 million was lowered today to an estimated $4 million.
"The safety of South Florida residents and family members, and repairing the severe damage to homes and businesses are far more important than our lottery games," Secretary Marcia Mann said.
"Buying lottery tickets is probably the last thing anyone in South Florida is thinking about," she said.
Even if South Florida residents wanted to play the games, most of the stores in Dade County that sell the tickets are closed or have no power or telephone service.
As of Tuesday morning, more than 1,400 of the Lottery's 7,500 on- line computer terminals were not operative. Monday night after the storm moved across the peninsula, there were 2,000 terminals out.
Amazingly, 87 Lottery terminals were operating in Dade County Tuesday morning. But more than 950 were not operating. A terminal cannot operate without both electrical power and a (dedicated) telecommunication line.
LOTTO sales for next Saturday's drawing were down by nearly 17 percent or about $282,000 Tuesday, but the higher sales days for LOTTO are Friday and Saturday. LOTTO jackpots, paid to 6-of-6 winners, are determined by LOTTO ticket sales. When no one matches all six winning numbers, the jackpot is said to "rollover" to boost the next week's jackpot estimate.
It is believed that many Dade and Monroe retailers will re-open before Saturday's drawing, but others may not have power or telephone service for days.
The Florida Lottery office in Miami appears to have suffered only minor damage, but remains closed until further notice. The Lottery's Fort Myers and Broward offices were closed Monday, but re-opened Tuesday.
South Florida players who need information on claiming winning tickets may call the toll-free Florida Lottery player information line at 800-PLAYFLA (800-752-9352).
