LOT POLISH AIRLINES FLIES UKRAINE ORPHANS TO CHICAGO FAMILIES
CHICAGO, Jan. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- When LOT Polish Airlines arrives from Warsaw, Poland on Tuesday, Jan. 28, it will be nearly half-filled with 125 orphan children, ages five to 12, from the city of Ternopil, in the Ukraine who will be cared for in the homes of more than 100 Chicago families, who will be waiting at O'Hare Airport to greet them.
The project was conceived by the Rev. John Shep, director of Thoughts of Faith, a branch of the Lutheran World Mission located in Stoughton, Wis. "Because of the breakup of the Soviet Union, the Ukrainian government is without enough funds to feed these kids and keep them warm," said Lawrence Marquardt, a vice chairman of the World Mission, who was responsible for finding enough homes in the Chicago and Northern Illinois/Southern Wisconsin area.
"The response was overwhelming. Within four days we had over 150 families volunteering and we actually had to turn some away," reported Marquardt.
"We are especially grateful to LOT Polish Airlines who made it financially possible for us to bring every single child to Chicago," said Marquardt. "We want everyone to know what a wonderful thing they did.
Working together with the headquarters for LOT Polish Airlines in Warsaw, Poland, Andrzej Kozlowski, of the LOT Chicago office, was able to arrange for a special charter to pick up the children in Lvov, Ukraine on the morning of Jan. 28, fly them to Warsaw where they will be put on board LOT's Boeing 767 non-stop regular flight to Chicago and arrive here the same day.
Most of the funds for the trip are being provided by Marvin Schwan who owns an ice cream company in Marshall, Minn., and George Skestos, Columbus, Ohio contractor, both of whom are active members of Thoughts of Faith.
