LOS ANGELES-AREA KMART PARTICIPATES IN NATION'S LARGEST BIRTHDAY PARTY;
 SPECIAL GUEST -- HOWIE LONG
 TROY, Mich., Feb. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Los Angeles will "have its cake and eat it too" when Kmart hosts the nation's largest birthday party on Sunday, March 1. Kmart Corporation (NYSE: KM), its 300,000 associates and their customers will celebrate 30 years of service in over 2,300 Kmart stores across the country.
 Los Angeles will play a special part in the celebration when Raiders' defensive lineman Howie Long participates in a birthday ceremony at the Kmart store at 3150 San Fernando Road at 4 p.m. Long will sign autographs from 5-6 p.m. Other Los Angeles-area Kmart stores will also host special parties.
 Long is known for being one of pro football's toughest defensive linemen. Long has been honored as the AFC's Defensive Lineman of the Year for three consecutive years.
 From Seattle to Savannah, the birthday celebration will officially begin with thousands of customers and associates singing "Happy Birthday" to the American retailing institution. At the Los Angeles store, Cordially Yours Quartet will lead customers in the sing-a-long. Immediately following the sing-a-long, free birthday cake will be available for customers.
 To mark its 30th birthday, Kmart will introduce a special advance edition of David Cohen's newest book "America: Then & Now." Cohen co-produced the successful "Day in the Life" series of photography books. The special advance edition will be available exclusively in Kmart stores. "America: Then & Now" features vintage photographs of America's life and times compared side by side with shots of the same subjects today.
 During the Los Angeles ceremony, Kmart will make a donation of the books to the Glendale Harvard Library, and Councilwoman Gloria Mollina.
 Bob Benson, Kmart western regional sales manager, will also participate in the special ceremony. Benson oversees Kmart stores in the Western Region.
 Kmart Corporation operates nearly 4,000 retail outlets in all 50 states in the United States and in Puerto Rico and Canada. Kmart, currently operating 2,375 Kmart stores, is also the parent company for Pay Less Drug Stores, Builders Square, Waldenbooks, PACE Membership Warehouse, The Sports Authority and OfficeMax.
