LOS ANGELES AREA CONSUMER PRICES DOWN 0.3 PERCENT IN JUNE

LOS ANGELES, July 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Prices paid for goods and services purchased in the greater Los Angeles area (Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties) dropped 0.3 percent in June, according to the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics. Sam Hirabayashi, the Bureau's regional commissioner, said that almost all major categories of consumer spending registered price declines during the month. The drop brought the All Items, Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers to 149.7, 2.4 percent above the June 1992 level. Since the first of the year, consumer prices in the Los Angeles area have risen just 1.0 percent, compared to a 2.2-percent increase reported for the first half of 1992. Local area data are not seasonally adjusted.
The cost of food and beverages dropped 0.3 percent in June to a level 3.3 percent above a year ago. Grocery prices were down 0.8 percent during the month due to a 6.9-percent slide in the cost of fruits and vegetables. The cost of eating out was up 0.2 percent, while alcoholic beverages were priced 0.3 percent higher.
Apparel and upkeep costs dipped 1.5 percent in June and were 2.0 percent lower than last year. The decrease from May reflected lower price tags on both women's and girls' and men's and boy's clothing items -- down 3.5 percent and 2.7 percent, respectively. Also contributing to the decline was a 4.1-percent decrease in the cost of footwear.
Transportation costs were down 0.4 percent during the month, but were 2.8 percent above June 1992 levels. The over-the-month decline was due largely to lower air fares which caused a 2.5-percent drop in public transportation costs. The private transportation index was down 0.2 percent from May.
Medical care costs edged down 0.1 percent in June but were 7.9 percent above a year ago. Entertainment costs dipped 0.8 percent for the month and were only 0.1 percent above June 1992. The miscellaneous other goods and services index rose a slight 0.1 percent from May to a level 7.7 percent above last year.
Housing costs averaged unchanged from May but were 1.2 percent higher than in June 1992. Both shelter and residential fuel and other utilities costs were up 0.1 percent for the month, but these increases were offset by a 0.4-percent drop in household furnishings and operation costs.
