 LORNE MICHAELS EXTENDS HIS EXCLUSIVE
MOTION PICTURE AGREEMENT WITH PARAMOUNT PICTURES
HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Lorne Michaels, producer of the smash hit "Wayne's World," has extended his exclusive motion picture production agreement with Paramount Pictures, it was announced today.
Michaels, whose initial production deal with Paramount began in 1990, will now develop a number of motion picture projects for the studio -- including a "Wayne's World" sequel and a film version of "The Coneheads," both of which are scheduled to be released by Paramount in 1993.
"In the last 20 years, no one has been a better developer of movie comedy talent than Lorne Michaels," said Brandon Tartikoff, chairman of Paramount Pictures. "Paramount and I are happy to continue our long relationship with Lorne and Broadway Video."
Said Michaels: "I hope the next year and a half at Paramount is as successful as the last year and a half, because if it is, I'm going to ask for a raise."
Michaels' production company, Broadway Video Inc., will maintain offices on the Paramount lot in Hollywood, as will Broadway Video's motion picture development executives -- John Engelman, president; Barnaby Thompson, vice president-creative affairs; and Dinah Minot, vice president-creative affairs.
"Wayne's World," the first picture produced by Michaels for Paramount, earned more than $120 million at the U.S. box office, ranking it among the top five pictures released so far this year. It has gone on to become a major hit in virtually every other country in which it has been released, thus far grossing more than $45 million at box offices abroad.
Michaels is executive producer of NBC's late-night comedy series "Saturday Night Live," which he created and has produced for 13 of the show's 18 seasons. Michaels' contributions as a writer and producer for the show have been recognized with four Emmy awards by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. In addition, he won two Emmys for writing and producing Lily Tomlin's specials in 1973 and 1975, and an additional Emmy for writing and producing Paul Simon's NBC special in 1977.
Under the Broadway Video banner, which he created in 1979, Michaels has produced one other feature film, the 1987 Orion release "The Three Amigos," starring Chevy Chase, Steve Martin and Martin Short.
Broadway Video has also produced television series such as "The Kids in the Hall" on CBS and "Night Music" for NBC.
Additionally, Michaels produced Paul Simon's 1991 concert in New York's Central Park, which was telecast live on HBO. In 1980, he produced and directed the Broadway production "Gilda Radner Live From New York" and later produced the movie version of that show.
Previously, Michaels produced and/or wrote specials for the Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys, Flip Wilson, the Ruttles, Randy Newman, Steve Martin, Neil Young and Simon & Garfunkel. From 1968 to 1975, he was a writer for series television, including the landmark "Rowan & Martin's Laugh In."
Michaels began his career in his native Canada, where he was a producer for the Canadian Broadcasting Co. He holds a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Toronto.
Paramount Pictures is part of the entertainment operations of Paramount Communications Inc.
