LORAD'S DIGITAL IMAGING SYSTEM PATENT CLAIMS ALLOWED

SAN DIEGO, Calif., Feb. 16 /PRNewswire/ --The United States Patent Office has notified LORAD Corporation that patent claims related to its CCD (charge coupled device) camera, which is at the heart of its new DSM( Digital Imaging System for use in mammography, have been allowed. LORAD, a subsidiary of ThermoTrex Corporation (AMEX: TKN), expects the patent to issue within a few months.
The CCD camera was designed by LORAD's digital engineering group, led by company chairman Tony Pellegrino. Digital imaging, the newest technology in mammography, creates a detailed image on the computer screen within seconds of taking an X-ray. Because digital imaging eliminates the time required for film development, the procedure is much faster.
LORAD's DSM system, approved by the Food and Drug Administration last November, is designed to target a specific area of the breast where a suspicious mass has been detected in a routine screening mammogram. The DSM system, which uses a lower radiation dose than a traditional film- based system, allows the physician to enhance the mammography image for better visualization and can be used with the LORAD M-III mammography unit and the LORAD StereoGuide* needle biopsy system.
"This digital imaging system has the potential to revolutionize mammography," says Pellegrino. "By combining ThermoTrex's strength in research and development with LORAD's recognized expertise in mammography systems, we are working to make whole-breast digital imaging a reality."
ThermoTrex Corporation develops advanced technology in electro-optic and electro-acoustic systems, signal processing, materials technology, lasers, and thermionic and thermoelectric direct-energy conversion. The company also manufactures and markets imaging systems for early detection of breast cancer. In addition, ThermoTrex is developing other commercial products for the medical imaging and avionics industries. ThermoTrex Corporation is a public subsidiary of Thermo Electron Corporation.
