LOOKING FOR THE REAL THING ON FAT TUESDAY? FARMER JACK/A&P TO OFFER OLD WORLD PACZKIS

HAMTRAMCK, Mich., Feb. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Mmmmmmmm, isn't tradition grand!
It's that time of the year to enjoy the blessings of one's Polish heritage, or to become an honorary member of the European culture, for that all-important ethnic celebration -- Paczki Day!
And, Farmer Jack/A&P Supermarkets are doing it up right, starting at 6 a.m. Feb. 23.
In honor of Fat Tuesday (Feb. 23), the day before Lent and the last chance to indulge in something sinfully sweet before fasting and self- sacrificing for 40 days, Farmer Jack/A&P is preparing the original paczki. (There is a difference from plain jelly doughnuts available the rest of the year.)
Using quality ingredients and a time-tested recipe straight from the old country, the supermarket sweet will feature raspberry, prune, strawberry, lemon and custard fillings. Pastry craftsmen will work throughout the night preparing 750,000 paczkis (filled with 67,500 pounds of jams and jellies) for Fat Tuesday, available in all Farmer Jack/A&P Supermarkets with bakeries throughout the Detroit area.
Paczki Day participation runs $4.98 a dozen and advanced orders are encouraged.
But, preparing paczkis alone is not enough for the Hamtramck Farmer Jack supermarket located at 9023 Joseph Campau and Holbrook, right in the heart of Detroit's Polish community. In anticipation of Fat Tuesday, on Monday, Feb. 22, Farmer Jack's "doughie paczki dancers" will parade down Joseph Campau to kick off Fat Tuesday and end up at the Hamtramck Farmer Jack, where from noon to 2 p.m. the "doughie dancers" will greet customers with complimentary paczki samples and hot coffee.
Then, on Feb. 23, all "hands" will be on deck in the Farmer Jack/ A&P bakeries to make sure there are enough paczkis to satisfy the consumers' appetite.

 /NOTE: Attention Paczki Day planners:
For journalists, it's the same every year. Find a bakery with "paczkis here" emblazoned on the windows and a sea of people pushing toward the counter. Interview bakers about paczki preparation and the mad rush of business. Interview customers who will admit to overindulgence, but will vow to diet during Lent.
 Another Paczki Day story.
This year, Farmer Jack/A&P Supermarkets offer a new twist to the annual event -- a behind-the-scenes look at paczki making.
Through Monday, Feb. 22, members of the media are invited to roll up their sleeves and try a hand at creating the perfect paczki. Recording equipment will be welcome into the bakery to capture the action and a supermarket representative will be on hand to answer questions.
To add to the story, Farmer Jack/A&P has made the world's largest paczki -- weighing in at 5 pounds.
