LONG-DISTANCE LAN PRODUCT TIES CROSS COUNTRY PCS
 INTO A SINGLE VIRTUAL LAN
BOSTON, Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Extension Technology Corp. today announced the Basic Rate ISDN (or BRI) LAN Adapter, the first long- distance LAN(tm) product. The BRI LAN Adapter lets PC users separated by thousands of miles form a virtual LAN. The Adapter consists of software and a 16-bit network interface board that plugs into a single full-length expansion slot in desktop or portable computers. The BRILAN Adapter works with an economical basic-rate ISDN digital telephone line.
Once connected to the remote network, the user's computer can act either as a workstation or server. The BRI LAN Adapter is compatible with IBM(R) PC/AT(R), PS/2(R) model 25, 30, 35, 40 computers or compatibles, and EISA computers. The suggested retail price for the BRI LAN Adapter is $1895. The company will begin shipping the product today.
"The BRI LAN Adapter provides a totally transparent way for PC users to create virtual LANS of any size or configuration," said Extension Technology Corp. CEO Eugene Chang. "The idea of long distance LAN is simple, The BRI LAN Adapter lets you instantly add distant computers to your LAN. Adding a LAN node a thousand miles away is now as easy as adding a node just down the hall. We exploit ISDN digital technology to make the public telephone network act as a virtual LAN wiring hub. Long Distance LANS connect small remote locations that would be intimidated by the cost and complexity of LAN/WAN internetworking products, such as bridge/routers, leased lines, and DSU's."
Chang added that "Using the BRI LAN Adapter is like getting your own private network connection with fractional T-1 data rates for the cost of dial-up telephone service. We offer performance 12 times faster than analog dial-up with a V.32 (9600 bps) modem and cost saving features like automatic Suspend/Resume. Small and large businesses alike can take advantage of 'just-in-time networking' with long distance LANs."
Commenting on the strategic affects of the new technology, Vice President of Marketing Robert A. Rolla said that "Today's fast changing business climates demands a new level of global data networking. The BRI LAN adapter meets that demand by letting companies make growth decisions on the fly. If you're based in new York and hire a new sales representatives in California, you can add him or her to your virtual LAN almost overnight. That kind of 'SWAT networking' shortens business cycles and lowers overhead." Suspend /Resume(tm) Feature
The BRI LAN Adapter offers an important cost-saving feature called Suspend/Resume, which saves significant telephone fees by automatically disconnecting a node from the rest of the long-distance LAN when no data traffic is present, and reconnecting instantly as required. Suspend/Resume is effectively transparent to the user because reconnection is automatic and takes place in less than one second. Hardware Compatibility and Specifications
The BRI LAN Adapter provides a direct connection to the long- distance LAN. It is compatible with existing bridges and routers but does not require them for its operation. It is also compatible with existing Ethernet and Token ring installations. The BRI LAN adapter plugs into all desktop computers having full-length ISA or EISA bus slots.
Adding a long-distance node to an existing Novell(R) network that uses traditional LAN media (for example) is straightforward. The BRI LAN Adapter is supplied with drivers for the Novell(R) Netware(R) 3.1 and NetWare(R) Lite Version 1.0 Networking Operating Systems. The BRI LAN Adapter is compatible with all existing NetWare applications software.
The BRI LAN Adapter workers with standard Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) Basic Rate (BRI) digital telephone lines (2B+D) as supplied by most local telephone companies. It uses RJ-45 type cable (10 feet long, supplied) for connection to a telephone jack. The product is FCC Class B approved for use in homes for telecommuters. The BRI LAN Adapter uses voice-grade unshielded, twisted pair telephone wire; local telephone lines can be up to 3.4 miles from the central office.
