LOMMA ENTERPRISES, INC. SELLS MINIATURE GOLF COURSE TO CHINA; HOTEL ROOFTOP SITE PLANNED

SCRANTON, Pa., March 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Tourists playing miniature golf on hotel rooftops is a common sight -- but in Communist China?
Lomma Enterprises, Inc. of Scranton, the leading manufacturer of miniature golf courses, recently scored a marketing "hole-in-one" by selling the first miniature golf course to be set up in Communist China.
Ralph J. Lomma, president of Lomma Enterprises, Inc., said the course will be located on the rooftop of the Wulumugi Holiday Inn in Zinjian Province, near the Russian border.
Lomma said Lomma Enterprises' leadership in the miniature golf industry, as well as its international reputation, were the keys that prompted individual entrepreneurs from China to contact the Pennsylvania firm.
Lou Yan, a well-known actress in China, approached the company to discuss the feasibility of putting one of the symbols of America and one of the symbols of great American family fun on a hotel rooftop in China.
Lomma said his company is no stranger to international relations and suggested that perhaps the actress had been exposed to one of Lomma's courses, which are sprinkled throughout the globe like so many balls on a putting green.
"We have courses throughout Western Europe as well as in the Far East, including the Philippines and Australia. We have courses in Israel and Nairobi as well as Costa Rica.
"Currently, we are working on negotiations to sell and set up courses in other parts of the world, including Japan and Argentina, as well as Portugal, Spain and France," Lomma said.
He said Lomma Enterprises was proud to help bring a symbol of capitalism to one of the last great Communist powers, adding that several former Communist states are also seeking Lomma courses.
"Eastern Europe, while hungry for food and economic development, is also thirsty for diversion. We are currently entertaining offers to place courses in such former Communist states as Poland and Hungary," Lomma said.
He said one of the main advantages of Lomma-designed courses is their modular quality, which enables them to be set up in as small or as large an area as an individual may wish. The courses can be manufactured to the customer's specifications in the company's state-of- the-art plant in northeastern Pennsylvania and shipped to virtually anywhere in the world -- around the block or halfway around the globe.
Lomma said, "As a leader in miniature golf for almost four decades, Lomma has recently expanded its line of course offerings to include concrete-based courses which feature waterfalls, running streams, rock gardens, caves, expansive fairways, free-form greens and 20-foot-high mountains.
"China isn't quite ready for that. What they wanted was an easy-to- install, easy-to-operate, easy-to-maintain turnkey operation that could start generating revenue as soon as it was set up. That is what they got. It was `pingpong diplomacy' that brought the governments of China and the United States closer together. Perhaps miniature golf, so synonymous with the American way of life, will help bring the peoples of these two countries together," Lomma said.
