LOGITECH SHIPS SCANMAN(R) MODEL 256 GRAY SCALE SCANNER WITH
 PERCEIVE PERSONAL(TM) OCR SOFTWARE
Package Provides Complete Solution for Image and Text Capture
 In the Windows(TM) Environment
FREMONT, Calif., Dec. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Logitech, international market leader in pointing devices and imaging solutions, today announced it is shipping ScanMan Model 256 with Perceive Personal 1.1, a true omnifont optical character recognition (OCR) software package from OCRON. The ScanMan 256/Perceive Personal bundle combines a top- rated hand-held gray scale scanner with powerful OCR software to provide a complete solution for image and text capture in the Windows environment. It is available through Logitech dealers and distributors at a suggested retail price of $549.
The ScanMan Model 256/Perceive OCR bundle allows Windows users to capture and transform text, which is normally saved as a graphics file, into text that can be edited for republishing or archiving. The use of omnifont technology means Perceive Personal is capable of reading a wide variety of fonts, point sizes, and attributes (such as boldface or italics) without the need for users to "train" the package.
"Today's hand-held scanners, with their increased functionality and sophistication have become a serious desktop tool," said Charlotte Torrey, director of product marketing for Logitech's Imaging Solutions group. "Until recently, however, these devices were used almost exclusively to add graphics to various documents. Now users are demanding OCR capability as well. By bundling ScanMan Model 256 with Perceive Personal, we're offering users the best solution available for capturing both text and graphics in the Windows environment."
ScanMan Model 256 is an 8-bit scanner that captures gray-scale data at the hardware level to produce photographic-quality scanned images at 100 to 400 dots per inch (dpi). It includes Logitech's FotoTouch(TM) software, which provides a combination of sophisticated features, including photo retouching and other darkroom techniques. Since its November 1990 introduction, ScanMan Model 256 has received numerous industry awards including, Infoworld's Product of the Year, PC/Computing's MVP (Most Valuable Product) award, Publish! Readers' Choice, PC Magazine's Editor's Choice, and System Integration Magazine's Product of the Year for 1991.
Perceive Personal 1.1 combines the power of true omnifont OCR with the convenience of full-page text recognition. Users can scan parts of a page or a full page and automatically merge output text into a single, continuous file suitable for word processing and other desktop applications. Perceive Personal automatically reads text with over 99 percent accuracy on documents of good scanned quality and offers recognition speeds of 50-150 characters per second depending on the complexity and text density of the scanned image. Windows operation makes it possible to cut and paste from Perceive into almost any word processor and provides built-in text and image editors.
The bundle is available for the PC version of ScanMan Model 256, which requires a half expansion slot, a hard drive, and at least one megabyte of RAM. FotoTouch and Perceive Personal require Microsoft Windows 3.0 or higher.
