LOCKWOOD IN JOINT VENTURE FOR IMPORTING WINES TO MEXICO

SALINAS, Calif., Oct. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The partners of Lockwood Vineyard, a highly regarded winery in Monterey County, and Mrs. Robert Krause and Sr. Ruben Cerda, owners of the internationally known hotel and restaurant Las Mananitas in Cuernavaca, Mexico, said today they have formed Lockwood de Mexico, S. de R.L. de C.V., a company to import Lockwood wines into Mexico for sale in that country's finest hotels and restaurants.
The agreement was announced by R. Paul Toeppen, managing partner of Lockwood Vineyard, and Cerda. Heading the sales operation for the new venture will be Jose Mantecon from offices in Mexico City and Cuernavaca.
Lockwood wines have been featured for some time on the wine lists of The Twin Dolphin and La Palmilla hotels in Mexico where the wines have been very well received. Initially the new company will be importing Lockwood Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Johannesberg Riesling and Retosco Alfresco, a rose-style wine unique to Lockwood.
"We are extremely pleased to have this project in place," noted Toeppen, "and just delighted to have Ruben Cerda join us in this fine wine partnership. Mrs. Krause and Sr. Cerda own one of the finest hotels in the Western Hemisphere and just having our wines on the Las Mananitas list, alone, would be an enormous benefit to our reputation. However, with Sr. Cerda and Sr. Mantecon strongly behind our brand, we know that Lockwood will soon have an important presence in Mexico's finest hotels and restaurants. This will create strong sales in Mexico and will be a great help in introducing Lockwood wines to an eminent international clientele.
Sr. Cerda underscored that the time was exactly right to create this international wine venture. "First of all, I have known Paul Toeppen for years and know that the wines of Lockwood are of the highest quality. While Lockwood is a new brand, it has done remarkably well in a very short time. With so many sophisticated Americans, among them many Californians, coming to our great resorts, they will welcome seeing a group of excellent Lockwood vintages on the wine list. We have offered Lockwood wines to key Las Mananitas guests and they have been particularly pleased. To protect quality, we are building special temperature-controlled warehouses in Mexico to insure that the wines will be carefully stored."
Las Mananitas was founded by Robert Krause in 1955; he had been a corporate lawyer in the United States before coming to Mexico to fulfill a dream. The place soon became internationally famous both for its sublime atmosphere and world-class restaurant. It is now one of two Mexican hotels in the prestigious Relais and Chateaux group. Cerda virtually grew up at Las Mananitas. His story is one of the great personal achievements in the hotel and restaurant world. He began as a part time bus boy in the summer and progressed to manager, then co-owner on the death of Mr. Krause several year ago. Cerda also has supervised very sensitive additions to Las Mananitas.
Lockwood Vineyard was founded in 1981 by Toeppen, Butch Lindley and Phil Johnson, three Californians with long-time interests in fine vineyard property. The 1650-acre Lockwood Vineyard is in a beautiful, remote location in Monterey County, just south of Carmel, toward the southern end of the Salinas Valley. The state-of-the-art winery was completed in 1989. The first commercial vintages from Lockwood in 1989 received 19 major awards. The winery recently was awarded a citation by Wine & Spirits magazine as one of the top small wineries in the United States. At the recent American Wine Competition, the Lockwood "Partners Reserve Chardonnay" was awarded a rarely given platinum award, one of only two awarded from 352 chardonnays tasted. In fact, among all top wine competitions, Lockwood finished in the top 7 percent. Stephen Pessagno is the winemaker.
