LOCKHEED ANNOUNCES RENO AS SITE OF HEADQUARTERS
FOR NEW NON-DEFENSE LINE OF BUSINESS
CALABASAS, Calif., Sept. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Lockheed Corp. (NYSE: LK) today announced Reno, Nev., as the site for the headquarters of MountainGate Data Systems Inc., a new company that will add another non-defense business to the corporation's portfolio.
MountainGate, which specializes in magnetic and optical storage products and subsystems, was formed this summer when Lockheed completed the acquisition of two small data storage firms in which it held an interest: MDB Systems Inc. of Orange, Calif., and Cherokee Data Systems of Boulder, Colo. MountainGate's president is Dr. Glenn T. Williamson.
Estimated sales of the combined operation are expected to reach $25 million this year.
"MountainGate is another step in our strategy to grow non-defense lines of business," said Lockheed Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Daniel M. Tellep. "Under Glenn's leadership as president, the new company will implement growth plans based on the aggressive pursuit of new markets for the company's data storage products."
MountainGate's primary thrust is directed toward national and international commercial markets.
MountainGate, with its DataShuttle(TM) series of 5 1/4-inch storage products and its new IncreMeg(TM) 3 1/2-inch line, is the leader in removable disk drives for the multimedia industry, including pre-press, desktop publishing, video editing and other memory-intensive applications. MountainGate is also the leading provider of optical and removable disk drives for industrial, rugged and secure environments.
The Reno facility, located a few miles south of Reno Cannon International Airport in the new South Meadows planned unit development, will house approximately 150 employees and includes adjoining land for future expansion.
Lockheed, headquartered in Calabasas, is a world leader in defense and space systems technology, designing and producing missiles, electronic systems, satellites and military aircraft, as well as providing a wide range of government and commercial aeronautical, space, environmental and engineering services.
