LOCAL TELEPHONE COMPETITION REPORT AVAILABLE TO INVESTORS
TAMPA, Fla., June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- A report which outlines current activity in the growing competitive local telephone market is available to those investors who are interested in learning more about this industry.
Justin Asset Management, based in Arlington, Va., recently released a white paper describing many variables facing local telephone companies today, including: regulatory issues (both state and federal), potential mergers and acquisitions of competitive access (CAP) telephone companies, and the promise of new products offered by the CAPs.
Among the topics covered in the report was an overview of the CAP industry, indicating that only 2 of the 24 are publicly traded. According to the report, Tampa, Fla.-based Intermedia Communications of Florida, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: ICIX) (ICI), and Intertel (AMEX: ITREC.EC) -- the parent company of Denver Teleport, are the only companies for which verifiable statistics are available.
According to the report, ICI had EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) of $692,000 at the end of 1991, while Intertel had an EBITDA of ($673,398). The report also indicated that ICI had 165 route miles compared with Intertel's 115, and that ICI general and administrative expenses were approximately half of what Intertel reported.
Furthermore, the report stated that regulatory action supporting competition at the local telephone company level will continue to be favorable for this industry, and that the additional products offered by CAPs to their customers (such as disaster recovery programs) are going to be the basis for strong growth in the CAP industry.
