LOCAL STUDIES EXPOSE DANGERS OF CADMIUM FOR WORKERS HANDLING CERTAIN PAINTS

SEATTLE, Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- While attention has focused on the dangers of lead in paints, recent studies by a local industrial hygiene firm reveal that workers handling paints may unknowingly be exposed to hazards from cadmium, as well as cobalt and chrome, Hazcon Inc. announced today.
The study was conducted by Hazcon Inc. as part of its on-going involvement in health hazard control services. Hazcon is the region's largest diversified industrial hygiene, health and safety company. It's offices are located in Seattle; Portland and Salem, Ore.; and Missoula, Mont.
"Changes in standards do not require that ingredients like cadmium, cobalt and chrome be listed on material safety data sheets (MSD's) if the paint contains less than 0.1 percent of these minerals," says Jacquiline Villnave, staff Certified Industrial Hygienist with Hazcon.
"New MSD's will list whether these metals are present in paints," she explains. "However, cadmium is now considered a carcinogen and when used as a pigment in spray paint, many times the permissible exposure limits are exceeded. In addition, workers may unknowingly be exposed to cadmium during sanding of formerly painted surfaces, as well as during the application of new paint."
Information on the cadmium study is available by calling Hazcon, Inc. at 800-568-7755 or 206-763-7364.
