LOCAL HERO, U.S. CHAMPION, ANDY MILL TO PROMOTE
ASPEN SKI ACTIVITIES, DOMESTICALLY & INTERNATIONALLY
ASPEN, Colo., Oct. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Former U.S. ski champion and CBS-TV color commentator Andy Mill has been named director of Skiing for Aspen Mountain. In his new job, Mill will promote the resort on an international basis as well as planning various local ski activities, including the Subaru Aspen Winternational World Cup downhill course, Aspen Ski School programs and mountain improvements. He is the first director of Skiing appointed in 23 years.
Mill lives in Aspen with his wife, former tennis star, Chris Evert.
Mill, who was the top U.S. downhill skier for seven years, returned to Aspen from London where, with executives from the Aspen Skiing Co., he spent time boosting Aspen's ski facilities to the European market.
Figures indicate that around 30,000 German skiers travel to the Aspen slopes annually, while 80 percent of British skiers traveling to the United States wind up in the Rocky Mountains. "Some 13 percent of Aspen's annual visitors come from foreign countries," acknowledges Mill. "We see the international ski market as a natural and logical growth area for Aspen."
Mill, who came to Aspen at age 8, began his skiing experiences in Aspen -- "It's a mountain that formed my skiing spirit for over 30 years," he said. Mill was the U.S. National Downhill Champion in 1976 and had several World Cup Top-10 finishes. Mill skied in two world championships for the United States, as well as two Olympics, finishing sixth in the 1976 Olympic Downhill. Mill will continue to host around 20 nationally syndicated ski shows in the coming ski season and will return as CBS-TV color commentator at the 1994 Winter Olympic Games in Norway.
