LOCAL BUSINESSMEN ACQUIRE POPULAR WIN SCHULER FOOD BRANDS FROM CAMPBELL

LIVONIA, Mich., March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- A group of local investors today acquired Win Schuler Foods retail and food service products from Camden, N.J., soup maker Campbell Soup Co. (NYSE: CPB). Win Schuler had annual sales of approximately $5 million in 1992. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
The acquisition includes only Win Schuler retail and food service brands, including: Original Bar-Scheeze(R), Bar-Schips(R), Win Schuler Meatballs and Win Schuler Barbecue Sauce. The Schuler family sold the business to Campbell's Soup subsidiary, Vlasic Foods Inc., in 1982 but continues to own and operate three restaurants in Marshall, Jackson and Stevensville, Mich.
Hogan Partners, Inc., Livonia, finalized the acquisition agreements earlier today with executives from Campbell's. The group of investors is headed by Tom Bitterman and Robert Nunez who will act as general managers of the new entity. Bitterman and Nunez formerly were senior executives of Vlasic Foods.
"We're very proud to bring the ownership of these popular, high- quality food products back to the Midwest," said Bitterman. "Win Schuler Bar-Scheeze and Bar-Schips have become traditions in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio -- throughout the Midwest -- they're the most popular regional snack foods in the area."
Company executives said they have ambitious plans to expand both the product line and distribution of Win Schuler brands throughout its Midwest and Sunbelt markets across the United States.
 SNACK FOOD CONSUMPTION UP
Despite the recession, snack food sales in the United States reached $13.4 billion in 1992, up 5.6 percent over last year, according to a report issued by the Snack Food Association (SFA). "We see significant growth potential for the industry and our brands," Nunez added. "Win Schuler brands are high-quality, good-tasting products that we expect will be extremely popular with today's snack food consumer."
Win Schuler Bar-Scheeze is the leading cheese spread brand in Michigan, according to Nunez, and its popularity is bolstered by consumer trends toward greater snacking, convenience products and quick and easy entertaining.
All Win Schuler products are produced in the Midwest and the company has no plans to change its manufacturing sites. The company's cheese, meat and sauce products are packed in Marshall, Mich., and snack crackers are packed in Benton Harbor, Mich.
