RXi Pharmaceuticals expands operations, lease at Gateway Park

WORCESTER - RXi Pharmaceuticals, a biopharmaceutical company, has expanded its operation at Gateway Park and extended its lease at the park for two years.

The company, which moved to Worcester Polytechnic Institute's Life Sciences and Bioengineering Center at Gateway Park in December 2007, has since added staff and taken additional space at the park to accommodate its growing research and development programs.

The two-year extension on RXi's lease is effective through August 2011. In addition to the lease extension for its facilities, RXi maintains an option to move into the next life sciences building to be built at the park.

American Superconductor will study new 10-megawatt wind turbine

DEVENS - American Superconductor Corp., an energy technologies company, announced that it has entered into a cooperative research and development agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory and its National Wind Technology Center to study the economics of a full 10-megawatt-class superconductor wind turbine.

American Superconductor is separately developing full 10 megawatt-class wind turbine component and system designs.

Saint-Gobain donates $4,000 for cancer patients

WORCESTER - Saint-Gobain's operations in Worcester and Northboro have donated $4,000 to Why Me & Sherry's House in Worcester. The money will help support the agency's Childhood Cancer Lifeline program, which helps children and their families cope with childhood cancer by providing them with emotional and educational support, and housing assistance.

Staples names Shira Goodman to position

FRAMINGHAM - Staples Inc. announced that Shira Goodman will become executive vice president of human resources effective May 1, responsible for Staples' global human resources strategies and programs. Ms. Goodman, formerly executive vice president of marketing, will succeed Susan Hoyt, who will retire in September.
