LOCAL AUTHOR PUBLISHES LITTLE KNOWN WORK BY KATHERINE ANNE PORTER
SHAWNEE MISSION, Kan., Nov. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Local author Holly Franking has edited an important addition to the works of nationally acclaimed writer Katherine Anne Porter. "Mae Franking's My Chinese Marriage'" has been published this fall by the University of Texas Press.
This is the true and controversial love story between Mae Munro Watkins of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Tiam Hock Franking of Amoy, China. Although interracial relationships such as theirs were bitterly and publicly discouraged in the early 1900s, Mae and Tiam eventually married while both were students at the University of Michigan and then moved to China. There Mae raised three children, taught college English, and helped Tiam with his own teaching and legal work. And by her own conscious choice, she also succeeded in becoming a proper Chinese wife and daughter-in-law.
Working from interviews with Mae Franking and from material in Franking's original manuscript, Porter ghostwrote this autobiography. Later Porter would go on to write such short stories as "Noon Wine," "Pale Horse, Pale Rider," and the novel "Ship of Fools."
Joan Givner, Porter's biographer, writes in her foreword to this annotated edition that Porter's work on "My Chinese Marriage" "forms the transition between (Porter's) work as a journalist and her work as a fiction writer." Givner also cites a number of parallels between the text of "MCM" and other works by Porter, showing how "MCM" significantly influenced Porter's development as a literary artist.
The Franking's granddaughter, Holly Franking, provides previously unavailable material in this annotated edition of "My Chinese Marriage": a narrative account of Mae's life with Tiam, and their private letters, as well as contemporary newspaper accounts that portrayed the marriage as deplorable.
Holly Franking, a resident of Mission, Kan., is the niece of Cecile Franking Wu and Alason Hock Franking. Franking earned a Ph.D. in English from the University of Kansas. She and her husband, John Slegman, a programmer analyst at H&R Block, are co-founders of the software publishing company Diskotech, Inc.
"Mae Franking's My Chinese Marriage'," which sells for $16.95, can be found at selected bookstores nationwide or ordered directly from the University of Texas Press by calling 800-252-3206.
