LITTLE-KNOWN WASHINGTON WHITE WINE RECEIVES NATIONAL RECOGNITION
WOODINVILLE, Wash., Feb. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The following was released today by Stimson Lane Wine & Spirits Ltd:
Tired of chardonnay? Well, here's a compelling reason to try semillon (pronounced Semi-YAHN), a classic French dry white wine.
In the Feb. 6 edition of the Los Angeles Times, Chateau Ste. Michelle's 1990 semillon placed first, averaging 17 points on the University of California-Davis 20-point wine evaluation scale.
According to nationally syndicated wine columnist Dan Berger, "|This is~ the highest average of any wine in the history of my judgings."
Berger continued, "The Columbia Valley is one of the greatest semillon regions in the world, and this wine is a stunning example: an outrageously floral and compact wine... with a gloriously complex aroma of pear, pine and juniper, totally dry with a creamy undertone and a stylish softness."
Semillon is highly regarded in France and it's one of two grape varieties that are used in white Burgundies. The wine also makes exceptional dessert wines, such as the highly regarded Chateau d'Yquem.
With its 1967 vintage, Chateau Ste. Michelle was the first producer of semillon in Washington. Today, only 667 acres of this variety are planted in the state. Semillon is a versatile food wine which complements seafood especially well. The acclaimed 1990 vintage sells for $6.79.
