LITTLE MISS COPPERTONE TURNS 40 AND CONTEST TO FIND THE NEW LITTLE MISS -- AND LITTLE MISTER -- COPPERTONE BEGINS

Memphis, Tenn., Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- In 1953, Dwight D. Eisenhower became President, the N.Y. Yankees won their fifth World Series and one of the most recognizable and enduring icons in American advertising -- Little Miss Coppertone (she of the blue-bikini- bottoms and frisky-black-dog fame) -- was born.
Though it's become pop culture legend, two-time Oscar winning actress, Jodie Foster was not the original model for the logo. In her first-ever television appearance, Foster co-starred in a 1965 Coppertone commercial, (wearing a similar costume to the logo's) but not as Miss Coppertone. The logo's actual model was the artist's (Joyce Ballantyne's) three-year-old daughter Cheri, along with the neighbor's cocker spaniel.
To celebrate her 40th birthday, Schering-Plough, the Memphis, Tenn.- based leaders of the $600 million suncare industry, begins a contest to search for the new Little Miss and (for the first time ever) Little Mister Coppertone.
The two new Coppertone kids will be selected through a national photo/essay contest, with a gala final event to be staged in June at Walt Disney World in Orlando. The grand prize winners will appear in a Coppertone ad.
Other celebrities who have appeared in Coppertone ads over the last 40 years: Sandra Dee, Jill St. John, Barbara Eden and Raquel Welch.
Contest entries (available at special Coppertone in-store displays nationwide) will be accepted from February 1, 1993 through April 30, 1993.
To enter the contest, parents should send a photo of their child participating in an outdoor activity in which sun protection should be used, and an essay that tells why the use of sun protection is important to their family.
 Entries should be mailed to:
